    Hey Gang,

This may be something I have to live with, but I just want to see how everyone else is handling the following issue:

We are cutting a series that is shooting “time of Day T/C”. We are digitizing from a Panasonic AJ-HD1400 HDSDI thru a Kona 3 into FCP Studio 2. Because there is so much footage, we just digitize from start of tape “Digitize Now”. When a T/C break happens we have the FCP set up to make a new clip. The problem is it takes for ever for the deck to find the T/C break and then pre roll for the next clip.
This is wearing my heads out on the deck! Is this just inherant with FCP or do I need to use a AJHD 1700? Babysitting the digitizing is very inefficient. Any thoughts??

    thanks

Time code breaks make it impossible to batch.

if you are doing “capture now” you must switch
the deck control in fcp to “non-controllable device”
otherwise it does that which you are experiencing.

If you go into the “User Settings” in the FCP drop down, change how FCP deals with a TC break to warn after capture, then you’ll have just one clip that you can subclip. It will be faster and easier on your deck, but just as time consuming.

As far as one deck being faster than the other, the higher end deck ideally would be faster, but finding the exact frame of the TC break and doing the pre-roll is just plain time consuming.

If you need multiple clips, have your shooters take note of when they start and stop the camera and do a very quick log of the tape and let it roll after you get to the end of the tape.

If you do the later of the options you can just set it and forget it, because the breaks should be a null issue.

All options will take some of your time the later should take the least.
