  • Digital zooming and maintaining best quality possible?

Posted by Don Cobble on March 7, 2014 at 6:11 am

If I need to digitally zoom a clip, shot in 1920×1080 30p 35mbps.
Will it maintain less noise on digital zoom, if I use 720p master sequence for project with 1920×1080 clips? Or will it be the same in a 1920×1080 sequence?

I need the project to look as good and natural as possible. it will end up on DVD & Webcast.
    Thank You

Digital upscaling will always degrade the image.
    Drop 1920 into 720 timeline.

Ann is correct, the 720p sequence will give you more leeway zooming 1080p clips. HD is more forgiving than SD for a “little” zooming/reframing – loss is barely noticeable a lot of times, but if you want to zoom more than a bit, and on many clips, then 720p definitely the way to go.

A tip – if you have “Scale to Frame” enabled in Preferences, this will automatically scale the 1080p clips to fit the 720p frame. On any clip that you wish to zoom, first right-click and disable Scale so that clip expands beyond the 720p frame edges. Now when you use Motion effect to scale, zoom will get the full benefit of the extra pixels when zooming.

    Thanks
