I am looking for a audio recorder that would not bust by budget ($500) but will give me good audio to record a salsa band. Should I use a boom mic (which one) or can I record direct to the recorder?

Hello Gunther and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

Getting a good recording of an entire band with one mic takes a lot of luck and a great deal of intelligence. You don’t tell us what the recording will be used for. Please give us more details.

Ty, I am filming at the same time with 2 stationary cameras from left and right and one for c/u footage, and would like to have a good soundtrack to use in the edit in FCP

    Gunther,

I would use a camera mic on one camera and a board feed to the other then find the right balance of each during post production.
