Digital Cinema Desktop Preview FCP 6.0.6
Posted by Simon Palframan on January 16, 2010 at 8:26 pmHello – I am not able to use the Digital Cinema Preview function. I have made sure that it is f12 ALL FRAMES instead of single frames etc – but every time I do the apple f12 command – I just get a freeze frame (& can hear the audio playing as normal). Does any one know how I can get the preview to work properly and play?!
In case it helps – I have just installed FCS 2 (FCP 6.0.6) on a new 17″ MBP running 10.6.2.
Thanks

January 18, 2010 at 7:59 amHi Kevin – thanks for your message. This has been driving me mad!
I am running OS 10.6.2 on a single screen (MBP 2.8, 4GB Ram). FCP version is 6.0.6. The project and media are all running from a LaCie Rugged external drive over Firewire.
The FCP project contains 1920 x1080 Quicktime Movies (captured in from HD cam) and also 1280 x 720 Quicktime Movies (from a consumer digital camera). Project also has subtitles and makes use of the Crumplepop photo plug-in.
Cheers

January 20, 2010 at 5:30 pmSimon, I’m not sure if you’ve solved your problem. I’m just seeing this post now. My solution to the same thing was to open System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse, and to then change the keyboard shortcut for Dashboard (which defaults to the shortcut used in FCP) to something other than command/F12 – such as simply F12. Then, in FCP, under View, set External Video to Off – not All Frames. Then set Video Playback to Digital Desktop Preview – Main.
Now you should be able to hit F12 and watch your stuff in full screen. Then use ESC to return to the timeline. And back and forth as you go. This is what works for me.
Hope this helps…

January 21, 2010 at 11:14 pmThanks for that Chris. I have all that set up ok and the command is working – the film goes full screen as it should – but just stays frozen like a freeze frame – while audio still plays. Then when I press space bar – the freeze frame jumps to where the play head as got to etc… If I press space bar very fast – I almost get continuous playback as it jumps through the footage 🙂 ! So frustrating!
Thanks

January 29, 2010 at 5:09 pmHm. I had that problem too after reinstalling FCP and my OS. I recall seeing things exactly as you describe and discovering that under View/External Video – All Frames or Single Frames was checked. It seemed to be the default until making the changes described above. Now I can’t even replicate your problem. Sorry I can’t be of any more help…

February 5, 2010 at 2:56 amAre you set to Unlimited Render? Sometimes if you try playing back HD footage that has too many effects and a yellow render bar, it will cause your playback to catch and hang on a frame while audio continues.
Render the sequence, reduce the amount of video tracks and effects and see if playback works. -

June 19, 2010 at 5:11 amhaving just spent several hours struggling with this problem, i think i have the answer. hoping to save an hour or two for someone else.
FCP appears only to be able to (“desktop preview” =) play back full screen sequences that are using standard codecs, frame sizes & aspects. while you can create whatever kind of a sequence and cut it, the preview function(s) only work when you conform with standards.
thus – it’s a good practice to load the closest standard sequence preset after you’ve allowed FCP to match the sequence to your imported clip.
