I’ve been looking for a good plugin to beef up After Effects’ 3D capabilities – to do a simple extrusion on a layer without jumping through hoops with the Shatter effect.

I’ve come across Digital Anarchy’s 3D Layer plugin, and it looks decent from what I’ve seen, but I’m having trouble test-driving it because it’s absolutely eating my processor alive, even with a 3GHZ machine with 2GB of RAM and a GeForce FX5200.

Anyone out there with experience with these plugins know of any optimization tricks so I can actually use tools like this without waiting a minute or two between screen updates?

If you have a recommendation for a different plugin, that’s welcome as well. Thanks in advance.

I should probably add a bit of detail: the effect I’m going for is that of a pie chart with a bit of 3D depth – a piece of the pie then flies out and makes its own chart. Not difficult – but adding 3D extrusion is proving to be a bit of a headache.
