    I’m working on a Digi Betacam deck for the first time. I have some footage on Beta SP and some on DigiBeta. I captured SP footage using uncompressed 8-bit and DigiBeta footage using uncompressed 10-bit. How can I export Beta SP footage to DigiBeta tape? Should I first export it as 10-bit QT and than import it in 10-bit sequence?
    Since I have DVW-M2000P which can play Beta SP also, can I capture it as 10-bit uncompressed?
    As you can see I’m a little bit confused about difference between 8-bit and 10-bit 🙂
    As much as I understand, uncompressed 8-bit is for Beta SP editing, and uncompressed 10-bit for DigiBeta editing.
    Am I right?

    Nope. Totally the editor’s choice to work in 8bit or 10bit.

    I edit in 8bit for all but about 5% of our work here. Your best bet is to decide which you want to work in and then capture it all to the same codec. 8bit works for pretty much 90% of all the work out there. some editors will chime in here and insist that 10bit is the way to go, but it’s a waste of drive space for very minimal gains for most editing. If you have a lot and I mean a LOT of gradated type graphics, then 10bit will be an advantage.

    I agree with Walter. Beta SP is natively 8 bit so capturing it in 10 bit buys you nothing.

    Um…. BetaSP is analogue last time I looked and has no bits….

    Well as you know, in the world of Final Cut Pro, we need to decide between 8bit and 10bit uncompressed when we capture, so it really doesn’t matter what BetaSP is natively. It’s going to become 8 or 10bit once you capture it in uncompressed.

    Yup. That’s why there’s some logic to capturing 10bit if:

    you’re in to a 10bit workflow,
    you want to get the max quality out of the SP for colour correction

    Very few, if any of our projects require 10bit for anything, especially those that start in BetaSP. Really, the visual loss is imperceptible unless you have a lot of gradated backdrops or graphics.

    10 bit is good for some projects, but really overkill for most.

    Or you’re into extreme colour correction. What I was getting at is that although benefit might be slight, there could be benefit and that analogue video isn’t limited to being worked on in 8bit through any inherent properties of the video.
