Digibeta audio bitrate
I’m laying off a show to digibeta this week & the mixer asked me what bit rate to use for a Digibeta. I know dbeta is natively 20bit, so if I use a 16bit 48khz file, will anyone be able to tell the difference between a 16bit and 24bit output? I’d read that 24bits get dithered down to 20bit, often with some audio artifacts and errrors.
I’m using FCP.

I do everything at 16-bit 48khz to Digibeta and it works.
Its not broken so I won’t fix it. 🙂

The 24 bit gets truncated to 20 bits unless you pre dither it. I don’t think the digi beta does dithering. Don’t fret about it.
Some dithering and noise shaping can create problems if you don’t know what you are doing. I have not heard any problems dropping a 24 bit file and laying off to digi beta and we are a sound post with FCP facility. Similarly 16 bit files work fine as well. A typical broadcast sound track won’t have anything like the dynamic range that would need a 24 bit file anyway.
