September 10, 2005 at 8:00 pmrotation rotates the object by the shortest path between the coordinates. orientation does not. rule of thumb i read from the chris and trish book was to orient the object to the position you want it to stay and to use rotate for the animation of it…

September 10, 2005 at 9:57 pmYep. If you try to animate orientation from 0 to 270 degrees, the object will go backwards 90 degrees, taking the shortest path. If you animate orientation from 0 to 360 degrees, it will not rotate at all.
… and Chris and Trish (through isaac) are righteous.

September 10, 2005 at 11:08 pmThink about Orientation being the pose of the object, and rotation is the direction and movement of the object.
For example, you have an airplane. Use orientation for how it poses in the air. That is, the tail is slightly lower than the front. Use rotation to simulate the action of turning in the air. Use orientation when the plane needs to orient itself in the direction its going.
Hope that helps…
