    Here is my scenario:

I would like to edit at multiple computers and edit where i leave off and continue to move from computer to computer.

    Will my idea work?
    1. Import and put all my project media files in one folder w/subfolders on my main cpu hard drive.
    2. Copy said folder and put it in my portable hard drive.
    3. Plug in portable hd to friends cpu, copy project folders to main hd, relocate the files, and edit off his main hard drive.
    4. Replace files from friends hd to my external.
    5. Go back to my cpu and repeat the process.

OR I can edit straight off the external hd, but I have not heard good things about leaving these things actively connected for a long time.

I’ve done it both ways and never had any issues using a USB external drive.
If you don’t feel comfortable doing it this way, copy all the files to both machines and then, assuming you don’t add any new files, all you need is the veg file.

I use external drives as media drives and backup, but generally work off an internal drive on a currently active project, mostly for performance reasons, but, yes, different external drives seem to behave differently: Some seem to stay quite warm while others are good about spinning down and remain cool, even when plugged in for days at a time.

One way to conveniently keep your projects semi-portable is to use the File > Save As – Copy media with project option and save the project to a new folder. I use this to archive every project when I’m done, but it’s also a mindless way to create a mobile version of the project, noting that you’ll get everything in the Project Media bin, but not everything in your work folder in the case where you’ve collected elements you haven’t used yet. (On the other hand, sweeping the Project Media bin clean before archiving also eliminates all the clips you thought you might need at the beginning of the project, but didn’t end up using.)

So when I use this option “File > Save As – Copy media with project” Vegas creates one big project file with all my source files? So all I have to do is transport the project file to another computer and repeat the process even when I add new files?

Thanks for any help, its making my job at school easier.

Actually disregard that last post, I just tried “File > Save As – Copy media with project” and it created the project file with the source files in one folder. Do I put these files in one folder in my portable hd?

Save and Copy all media right to the ext. drive. then plug that drive into another computer with the same or newer version of Vegas and it will open. Danny
