    Hey creativeCOW users.
doing a documentary and wondering if anyone could help me out?
All the footage is DV PAL stretched to fit a 1280 x 720 frame.
    appleProRes HQ compressor.
But there are a few odd shots in there that are NTSC.
i know FCP can play different formats on the same timeline, but my questions is this.
will the NTSC files be converted to PAL automatically when i export the final MOV? or MPEG2.
Im just scared theres a chance that even though the whole edit is in PAL, that when its burnt to dvd in NTSC and PAL versions, (by an outside company) that those NTSC shots will go out of sync with audio or something weird could happen to them.
Or does exporting your final edit automatically flattening everything in to same frame rate definatly?????

    any advice welcome.

    Hi Chi Chi,
FC can cope well with different codecs, sizes and pixels in the same sequence, but it doesn’t work well with stuff with different time bases. FC would just drop or repeat frames.
If you care about your movie, you need to convert your NTSC to PAl.

To convert your NTSC to PAL you can do it in Compressor for free. A very good alternative is the affordable plugin from Nattress.

Can I ask why you are editing DV PAL on a 1280×720 timeline? And you are just stretching the footage to fit the frame? Are you trying to get FCP to upconvert the footage to HD? If so, you are going about it the wrong way. FCP doesn’t upconvert well.

    Rafael,
    thanks for the quick reply!
so what your saying is, when i export my final edit as PAL, the few NTSC shots that are in there,
will automatically be converted to PAL, but with a possible loss of quality ie adding frames???
I do care about my movie, but as the deadline is ever so close and need to finish editing so we can do the soundmix, i dont mind loosing a little quality on a few shots, (as long as the audio stays in sync during output).
hopefully i have time to convert the files individually with compressor before that!
whats the best settings for converting SD NTSC to PAL in compressor?

    cheers

    no not trying to upconvert.
just some shots are actually shot in 1280 x 720, (the main interviews)
and i just thought, seemings though i wanted the final product in 16:9
id just stretch the background footage to fill the same frame. (with a little aspect tweaking so its not to noticeable)
the final product will be SD DVD.

is there a better way i should have gone about it?

If You just drop the NTSC in a PAL sequence, FC will make a dirty job.
In Compressor you need to set the Frame Control: ON.
In “Rate Conversion” you must set BEST.
Other option you have is to use the Nattress Standard Conversion plugin in FC.
