  • Different bitrate MP3 renders all the same size in SVP12

Posted by Norman Willis on September 21, 2014 at 4:41 am

I recorded a 56 minute talk (1 hr) as a 930.39 MB .wav file. I wanted to render it to 96 Kbps .MP3 in SVP12, and upload it to my website for embedded play, and also user download. I thought 96 Kbps would give a nice balance between quality and file size (for a talk).
I select “Render As,” then select MP3 Audio (*.mp3), but no matter what bitrate I choose, the resultant .mp3 file is 26,467KB (26.4MB) large.
In other words, no matter whether I select 64 Kbps, 96 Kbps, 128 Kbps, 192 Kbps, 256 Kbps, or 320 Kbps, SVP12 gives me a file that is 26,467KB (26.4MB).
I thought a slower bitrate should yield a smaller .mp3 file. Is that right?
I also thought a 96 Kbps file should be ample (for a talk). Is that right?
What am I doing wrong, that all bitrates yield the same size file?

That’s correct. I’m not seeing this behavior in Vegas Pro 13.0. I just rendered 1 minute of audio to 64 Kbps, 92 Kbps, & 320 Kbps MP3 and the files were 539KB, 1.57MB, and 2.63MB in size respectively just as you would expect. That’s directly from the templates supplied by Sony with no changes. Something is not right with your setup.

John, I am not sure what the issue was, but I upgraded to SVP13 and the problem went away.

    Thanks.

Great! Sounds like it might have been a bug in the Vegas Pro that you were using. Glad it’s working for you.
