“Different” audio popping
I have read the various posts describing the audio crackling/popping that appears when working within FCP, etc., but we have a client who is experiencing an audio popping issue that doesn’t seem to fall into this more common scenario (although it may be related).
Here’s what we’ve noticed so far: If FCP or AE are closed and the Kona preset is set to convert from HD to SD, we hear the popping from the rack-mounted Panasonic LCD….we also see popping on the BetaSP audio meters. If we change the Kona preset to SD the popping stops. Once FCP or AE are open the popping stops no matter what preset it is on.
We have tried zapping PRAM, updating to version 3.4 of the Kona software, and disabling the blackburst, but none of these has made a difference.
FWIW, this is happening on two suites that are set up identically:
Mac Pro Dual Core 3GHz
Kona 3/breakout box
Mac OS 10.4.9
AE 8.0a
FCP 5.1.4
Kona 3.4Any ideas??

That’s because you are sending an HD signal to your SD deck and the deck doesn’t know what to do with it so it’s freaking out, or you are picking up some sort of feedback which you can avoid by turning off E-E on your UVW1800.
Have you tired setting the video output to black in the control tab of the Kona Control Panel?

Thanks for the suggestions Jeremy, but neither of the suggestions did the trick. Let me throw out a few other bit of info that might assist in determining a resolution to this issue.
A typical workflow for this client would be to use 720p59.94 source footage, which is imported from a DVC Pro HD deck (via SDI) into FCP. After the usual post work in FCP and AE, the final sequence is output to any or all of DVD, BetaSP, and the above DVC Pro HD decks. We have set up a direct SDI connection to the DVC Pro HD deck, but have had to use the AJA D10CEA SDI to analog converters with the DVD and Beta decks.
We did another test after my initial post and discovered that the audio popping does not occur when we have output routed to the SDI-only DVC Pro HD deck, but only occurs when either the BetaSP or DVD decks are being used.
So from Jeremy’s comments, is it normal to hear audio popping when downconverting from a 720p-based timeline (or any HD timeline, for that matter) to the BetaSP/DVD decks? Is there some setting in the Kona CP that might be set incorrectly? Is it that we’re converting from SDI to analog signals?
