  • Differences between FCP 5 and FCP 7

I recently upgraded from FCP 5 to FCP 7 and was wondering if people could tell me any big changes in either efficiency, effects, or anything else. I’m diving straight into editing a pile of projects I got so don’t really have time to go through and find all the new features as I’d like. I’m sure I’ll discover them as I go but am just curious if theres any big changes so I don’t find anything out after the projects are done.

I already found smoothcam which is pretty incredible. And I know multicam is supposed to be alot better.

Using Canon DSLR’s so I think my importing is the same (using Mpegstreamclip to convert 1st).

The ProRes codecs are the biggest difference. And, Log and Transfer will actually allow you to ingest your DSLR footage properly from memory cards without using Streamclip.

You should check out the free plugin from Canon that uses the FCP log and transfer interface to turn your DSLR footage to ProRes.

ProRes, that’s another big change form 5 to 7

As far as interface, they are pretty similar. The log and transfer window is a bit different with more options.

One thing I particularly like is the way you can create speed change sequences in 7 by putting markers on the video track and dragging them to where you want that frame to be…
