  • Difference between Sony AVC/MVC and Sony MXF?

Posted by Ron Whitaker on December 10, 2011 at 1:03 am

In the Render As screen in Vegas Pro 11, there’s an option for Sony AVC/MVC and Sony MXF. What is the difference between the two render as formats?

I also noticed that if I choose, for example, the HD EX 1280×720-24p option within Sony MXF, then select Custom Template, the only options for Bitrate are 25(CBR)-SP and 35(VBR)-HQ. Where when I choose Sony AVC/MVC, then select AVCHD 1440×1080-60i, then Custom Template, you can actually choose different bitrates.

Is that just the way it is for different codecs?

There are so many options within the Render As screen for Output Formats, it can be confusing from all the options. Which one do you select? How do you know which one is best for your particular project?

    Thank you.

[Ron Whitaker] ” there’s an option for Sony AVC/MVC and Sony MXF. What is the difference between the two render as formats?”

They are two different containers. MXF can hold MPEG2 or MPEG4 and AVC can only hold MPEG4.

[Ron Whitaker] “Is that just the way it is for different codecs? “

Yes, these are limitations imposed by the different codecs that the containers use.

It all depends on your deliver format (e.g., Broadcast, DVD, Blu-ray, Web, etc.). That will often dictate what output formats you can use.
