February 8, 2013 at 3:00 pm‘Close’ will just close the comp window in the timeline viewer. ‘Close Project’ actually closes the file you’re working on and gives you a blank slate.

To add on what Zach ahs said:
“Close” option will close the composition and has a shortcut key ” Cntl + W”. If you press ” Cntrl + Alt + W “, All the composition from the Timeline will be closed.
I use this shortcut when too many comps and pre-comps are opened in Timeline just to clean up and then open only the required one.
