  • Difference between Chapter Marker & Scene on Arch

Posted by Linda O’connell on November 18, 2009 at 6:03 pm

I want to add some chapters and I see I have three choices and I am wondering what is the difference on Architect?

What is the difference between these options?
+ with an orange triangle- Insert Scene/Chapter Marker
+ with an blue triangle- Insert Chapter Marker
+ with an green triangle/rect shape- Insert Buttons on Video Maker

One other question, I have been using the orange one, but sometimes I get a “!” next to it on the time line.

    Thanks for your help!!!

To answer your second question first:
For DVD-compliant video files, markers must occur at I-frames. If a marker does not occur at an I-frame, the “!” tag will appear. To snap the marker to the I-frame, drag the marker along the timeline to one of the I-frame reference points

Now on to your first question.
From the DVDA online help menu:

    Scene/Chapter Markers

Scene/chapter markers are used when you add scene selection menus to your projects.

Using the Timeline window, you can place scene/chapter markers in your video file for viewers to use as navigation points. The scene/chapter markers allow you to move to certain portions of the video and begin playback. You can also use scene/chapter markers to link to a point in a video using end actions or to automatically create scene selection menus using the Insert>Scene Selection command.

    Chapter Markers

Chapter markers are used to denote different sections of your project. You can place chapter markers in your video file for viewers to use as navigation points to skip through the project. Chapter markers are ignored when you create scene selection menus using the Insert>Scene Selection command, but you can use chapter markers to manually create scene selection menus or link to a point in a video using actions.

    Buttons-On-Video Markers

When you add buttons to a video, the button regions in the timeline must be placed between two markers. Buttons-on-video markers allow you to create markers that can be used to place button regions.

Unlike scene/chapter markers and chapter markers, buttons-on-video markers are ignored by the remote control’s previous/next chapter buttons. When you add a button to a video, a button region is created in the Timeline window. Buttons-on-video markers can be moved so you can easily adjust the length of your button regions.

Very clear explanation but with which remote keys does one jump to chapters ????

I have a project of a dance show with 51 dances in total.
There is 6 main titles in this project ( hiphop , disco , emotional ,…)

So I would place 51 scene/chapters markers of which 6 are chapters.

Now which remote key allows to jump to next chapter ( instead of next scene/chapter ).

The only workaround that I can think of is to have an End Action for each dance to take you from that dance to the beginning of the chapter for that dance style.
From there, you can go select a different dance or go back to the main menu and select a different dance style.
I do this when I’m making a DVD for the animation program at the college I work for.
I get several 2D and 3D animations for a DVD.
The main menu has a Play All, a 2D and a 3D button.
Within the 2D and 3D sub menus are a Play All button and links to individual animations as well as a link to the main menu.
