im using final cut 6 and i have a scene where the actors are watching a film on television with music. i am looking to make this sound like it is coming from the television as opposed to an overpowering song enveloping the whole thing.

does anyone have any input on how this could be done? filters etc?

    thanks.

Whew, I haven’t seen the derivative of diegesis since college! Congrats, man. Not sure this is an accurate usage, though. Is the television set audio The Plot or merely an affectation?

The easiest way to get TV sound to feel like TV sound is to pipe your video through a TV set and record it in a quiet room, from the approximate position of the viewers, using a dual channel mic system to give it stereo imaging. You can fake it with all kinds of filters but the process is experimental at best. You work on it for many hours till you get it the way you think it should sound and then you discover your audience finds it hopelessly and obtrusively synthetic. Same can be said for telephone dialogue. Shoot it instead of trying to fake it.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
