Question from a camera person. If for example shooting 29.97.Should one use DF or always NDF,even if for broadcast.I have some memory of being told by an editor to shoot always NDF,as the DF can can be problem if you want to cut on that frame, and that DNF can be added to the final cut program? Is this right?

    Thanks

The purpose of drop frame time code is to make sure that TC remains true to real time in longform projects. It basically applies to the NTSC world.

Although we do mostly short-form, we run DF time code throughout the house. That way we know, no matter what, that TC gives us an accurate time/length reference.

Never had any problems cutting because of DF time code.

Ah ok,thanks for the info.So anyway its not the standard way to shoot everything NDF.Maybe just the preference of this editor.

    Thanks again for your time

Film based productions and 24p video will use NDF on the source since it allows for a repeated and consistent relationship between the timecode and the pulldown cadence. DF really matters on the sequence when doing projects over a minute for broadcast as mentioned earlier in order to keep true “clock time”.

So should 23.98p with pulldown always be NDF,I think it is by default in the Varicam, what about F900 which will shoot true 23.98p(or must 23.98 always have pull down?)

    Thanks

We use Non-Drop for ALL camera acquisition and any outside audio vendors prefer their files that way. We don’t get to Drop Frame until we builc / conform the broadcast master to get to air time.
