  • Detect Intersecting MoGraph Clones

    Posted by Peter Egermann on February 17, 2010 at 9:43 am

    I am using a MoGraph cloner to place several objects onto a surface. Is there a way to avoid that the clones intersect each other? For example by deleting intersecting ones with a coffee script? Or by introducing a minimun distance they should keep to one another?

    Thanks for any help,

    Peter

    Unfortunately MoGraph doesn’t use collision detection when placing object, but you can work around it as follows:

    * clone onto your object;

    * give the cloner and object mograph rigid body tags;

    * set mograph’s gravity to 0 (under project settings);

    * in the cloner’s rigid body tag, turn on Force>Follow Animation>Position And Rotation.

    When you hit the play button, everlapping objects will separate. Then you can make the cloner editable to keep the clones from moving around.

    Thanks for your reply, Adam. It seems to work perfectly for what I need.

    Hey there I have kind of the same problem.
    I am using mograph to position sprites with textures incl. alpha on them to create a deck of clouds.
    There occurs some intersection and I see the edges of the sprites.
    The alpha fits within the sprite, so I guess thats another issue.

    Anyone got an idea about fixing my problem?

    Just for all, who googles this problem like me. In newer versions of Cinema it is not necessary to seperate the cloners any more. Just hit the “Set starting point”-button in the dynamics tab of the Dynamic Tag and turn back on the gravity…

    I’ve tried this and a million other thing…spent two days testing the “Project – Dynamics settings menu” as well as adding a Rigid Body Tag onto the Cloner object and testing all combinations of collision, self collision, trigger time, initial state settings, Inherit settings, Individual Elements – top, second, all levels, margins, shape – automatic/mograph…you name it I tried it…still clones intersect while traveling along a path with random effector set to jitter position of clones.

    Cinema 4d rev.13

    I don’t know what else I could try. In 13, there is no Modynamics tags…just plain old Rigid Body or Collision tags under Simulation menu. : (

    Any help is greatly appreciated… Maxon sure didn’t think this simple problem through.

    the Rigid Body and Collision tags under the simulation menu *are* the MoDynamics tags, just in a new place since in 13 Studio they are a lot more powerful and can be applied to anything not just objects in a Cloner or a Fracture object.

    I don’t think you can do what you want with an effector since it will place the clones where it wants and then Dynamics will try and separate them if intersections happen but it will do it forcefully, maybe that can be controlled by Priorities but it it’s probably better to try and jiggle your clones with some other method – one of the particle forces perhaps. Can you post the scene?

    Yikes. This is quite a few versions of C4D ago. Where can I find The Force> Follow Animation section? (version 15)

    it’s the same as Adam described – they are in the Force tab of the Rigid Body tag. It’s just that applying the Rigid body tag isn’t done in the MoGraph menu anymore, it’s in the Simulation Tags menu if you right-click on an object in the OM.

    Adam,
    Thanks for responding. I usually don’t expect any life from threads this old. I was expecting a check mark for follow position and follow rotation. I just up the number up from 0 to 100 which worked.

    in the force tab though there isn’t a function to turn this on as described, just numeric value for both 0-100. Ive tried 100 and cannot achieve the process. any help please?
