I have to say I’m intrigued by Lightworks.

I think Lightworks may have a very big impact on the industry. It’ll certainly wind up in a lot of people’s toolkit. It’s still early yet but it will be interesting to see where it goes.

The only problem that I see with Lightworks now is that being open source, their update cycle is incredibly slow, they’ve been announcing a Lightworks for Mac for years and who knows when it’s going to be ready, I think they could have a serious impact, but they probably need to get out of open source mode.

I’m not sure they’ve opened the source yet.
Also keep in mind that even with “open source” a developer can display a strong hand in direction.
I think “OpenOffice” might be an example.

I’ve heard that EditShare’s motive may be the development and sale of high end “feature packs” for the Lightworks.
I’ve also heard that there’s been significant reworking of the code base so that it’s core is compatible across Windows, Linux, Mac. I’d imagine it’s not “slow” because it’s “open” (which it may not be yet) but that to get it there has been time consuming… and likely with some business model motive.
