HI All, Long time reader here on the cow but an extremely infrequent poster. I was looking for some insight on monitor aspect ratios for FCP/AE/Pshop use. Is 16:9 definitely the way to go? Here’s my situation, I am putting together a new FCP rig and I’m on the fence with what monitors to buy. I am looking for a dual monitor setup and was considering the 22 inch Dell 2209WA which is 16:10(1680×1080) aspect ratio and the Dell 23 inch 2311H which is 16:9 (1920×1080).

What is everyone here using? 16:10 or 16:9 monitors? I am leaning towards the 16:9 with the higher resolution. Is that a good move?

    Thanks in advance guys
    Chris

We have Dell 24″ monitors that run at least 1920 x 1200.

Your monitor choice is going to be driven more by what you anticipate delivering. If your deliverables are destined for broadcast, film or cinema, you’ll definitely want to invest in a quality broadcast display card and a good broadcast monitor that is capable of accurate color representation.

Thanks for the info Walter and Mark, I am planning on picking up the 17 inch FSI that Walter has spoken highly of for color correction purposes. I was more interested in finding out what people thought of 16:10 vs 16:9 aspect ratios for the computer displays.

Walter, by any chance… do you have your dual 24 inch monitors paired up with the 17 inch FSI? I was curious to know if the smaller 17 inch monitor looks silly next to a pair of 24 inch monitors. Dell has the Ultra Sharp 2410 which looks like a really nice display, I just thought that the 24 inch would completely dwarf the the 17 inch FSI and that’s why I wasn’t considering it.

    Thanks again for the help

P.S. Walter, really love the way your new shop is coming along.

The purpose of the monitors is different. You need the FSI only if you make CC.

About the 16×9 or 16×10 I don’t think is an issue, the think is that if you are doing HD you need a 1920×1080 for proper display. The DELL has a setting for 1:1. Each of your video pixels is displayed by a monitor pixel. That’s the proper way to display.
