Delivering spots in HD

How do you know they are in HD?

I have a Toshiba DLP. I get Digital HD. Watching the Monday night game.
When an SD commercial comes in it gets cropped to 4:3 and the resolution goes down.
A Samsung spot featuring Dan Marino comes on and stays 16:9 and in HD. On most network shows that are broadcast in HD the spots are still SD. On my 4:3 set upstairs the HD spots show as 16:9 letterbox. I was just wondering if anyone is producing and delivering HD spots – if so – what is the delivery format?

The point of my original post is you can’t always tell from “looking”.

If the station/network gets in some 16:9 (letterbox or “squished”) SD spots, the can re-format them to run as 16:9 in the HD “feed”.
Many hiqh-quality SD spots will look great in up-sampled HD.

But if you’re going to enter the HD production game “for real”, you should invest in, for instance, DVC ProHD gear.

Yes, it would be possible to deliver digital spots (SD or HD) on a hard drive.

IF… the station/network has the means (and desire) to convert it to their playback system or format.
