deliver raw footage?
Posted by Frank Stevn on January 10, 2013 at 12:11 amA client hired me to produce two 30 sec ads a couple of months ago. The ads were delivered and accepted.
Now, a new editor working for the client is requesting the raw footage used in the ads.
Is it OK to deliver the raw footage?
Should I charge for that?

What was your deal with the client? If you were paid to produce a final product only and they did not retain the rights to the footage then you have every right to charge for the raw footage because it was not part of the deal and the “new editor” is taking work away from you.

What to charge? If you don’t ever expect to work for this client again, then what do you have to lose by burning this bridge? What would it cost the client to reshoot with another videographer?

Yea, you have to ask yourself, why did they go to another editor? Why didn’t they come back to you? Was it because they just allow different groups to hire their own people and another group just wanted to re-use this footage or do they never plan on coming back to you again? in which case I agree with Steve, make sure it’s less money than it would take to re-shoot it but certainly don’t give it away for free if you own it. It’s all about maintaining a good client relationship or not.
