  • Deleting from every track instead of one?

Posted by Azure Thompson on February 17, 2019 at 9:48 pm

I’m new to Vegas so please forgive me if this is simple.

I’ve been trying to edit something, and up until saving things were going fine. Now, when I select a clip from one of my tracks and attempt to split, move, or delete it, it does the same to every other track. Have I pressed something by accident and not realised it? I’ve attempted the usual closing and restarting and I’ve looked around but I’m not entirely sure what the issue is.

It only seems to apply to one of my projects (I opened an older one and it worked fine), and it deletes clips both inside and outside the groups I have, so I’d assume it’s something I must have set on this project in particular. I also noted that clicking on certain clips highlights an array of other clips both from the same track and alternative tracks. It does not select all of clips from the same track, nor can I work out why it selects the ones it does.

I don’t need an urgent response but would appreciate any help; thank you!

Hi Azure. Please post a ScreenGrab here of your Track Headers including your Tracks.

    Cheers

Have you tried to Ungroup? ( press U for ungroup)

    Hi Azure

Just to add to Paul‘s comment, start fresh grouping wise. You could a Ctl-A (select all) and then Ungroup (U). Bear in mind that everything will be ungrouped, even the audio that matches the video tracks. You can then Group (G) the ones that need to be grouped.

But before you do that, check if your track headers are not all or partially selected as Graham hinted. I don’t know which version of Vegas you are using but it would be very similar to this if they are selected:

And like this once they are unselected:

If you are create a selection area with left click and drag typically everything in that selection will be deleted if you hit delete. If the cursor is above several tracks and nothing is selecting using split will split everything. If something is highlight yellow with by clicking on it or using the selection tool then only that will be effected. If you’re looking to delete several media events try clicking on the first one then hold ctrl as you click on the additional. If you want to delete portions of several clips you need to split them first or use the left click and drag method. You can either hit the delete key, the delete button, another way is to right click and just cut them, which sort of deletes them but you can do it without moving the mouse too much and with one hand. I love having a mouse with extra buttons so you can map things like delete, undo and split.

Thanks for the help, everyone. Ungrouping everything and doing it again seemed to work a charm; thanks!

Well, sorry to rain on your parade, but I think you’ve applied a momentary solution/fix to an issue that you’ll possibly doomed to repeat in the future. Hmmm…
