We’re shooting a lot of docs using an HPX-500. We’ve been importing all of the P2 footage into FCP and editing from there. When we do that, we essentially create Quicktime files of all the footage for potential use in the edit.

We now have a Blu-Ray burner for archiving. Now faced with long-ish burn times, we want to be careful about what we choose to archive. Is there any advantage to archiving the P2 footage in addition to the Quicktime capture scatch? Does it give us any conceivable advantage in terms of future uses for the material?

If not, my intention is to kill the P2 files and just archive the capture scratch, FCP project and ancillary graphics files. Is this a bad idea for some reason?

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Archive the original P2 files…not the quicktime imports.

You never know if FCP will support native MXF in the future (it can now with Raylight), and you never know what edit system you might be using in the future. Avid, Edius and a few others support native MXF editing. PLUS…the quicktimes you imported are ONLY viewable on a computer with FCP installed…because the DVCPRO HD codec only comes with FCP.

    Archive the original files.

Exactly- I’d even suggest working P2 CMS into your workflow for more robust and powerful archiviing:

[Shane Ross] “Avid, Edius and a few others support native MXF editing”

Avid, Premiere Pro (any day now with the CS3 update), EDIUS, SpeedEdit, Liquid, and Vegas (through Raylight) all support native MXF editing. So it’s not just “a few others”, it’s actually basically every NLE on the market with any manner of pretensions to being a professional editor. FCP’s the only one not playing along, but with Raylight you can get it there too. And presumably they’ll add support someday…

What’s FCP missing in not being able to edit MXF natively? Is it a matter of the time it takes to convert to QT, or something else?

Just download and run Raylight and FCP can edit MXF natively just fine.

I prefer importing so that I can review the footage and name it. But, I have used raylight as well and like it.
