I’m editing on FCP 6.0.2 and shot with the HVX200 in a 720 24pn format. Once my mxf files become MOV after ingesting into FCP, do I really need the MXF files since my mov will be my source clip in my scratch disk…it’s taking up twice the amount of space on my drives…or do I need to hold on to the MXF for some output reason, thanks.

Just to be sarcastic for a bit, once you capture your tapes, do you throw them out? Because they are taking up all that shelf space…

No…those are your masters. WHat if your hard drive failed and your media was lost? You’d be screwed. What you need to do is archive that footage on a firewire drive and put that on a shelf. Or what I do, archive it to bare SATA drives and put those on my shelf (cheaper). I have drive bays on my MacPro that make this easy, but Tigerdirect.com has SATA to USB adapters that make this easy.

Do not store the MXF files and MOV files on the same drive. If you lose the drive, you’ll be screwed again.

Yes you can throw away your MXF files but like Shane says if something goes down you won’t have a back up.
