Deinterlacing in FCPX – video tutorial

He said the proper setting for that clip would be “lower first”. Any idea why he would say that? Both upper and lower choices seemed to work.

I’m trying to shoot everything these days in 30p as it’s all going to the web, so it may be moot, but it’s nice to know this option is there.

HDV interlaced is upper but it’s not clear how the deinterlace is working.
If it’s throwing out one field the upper / lower indicator may mean which field is being preserved . . . if it’s throwing out a field.

Any thoughts on which of the two methods he described would be preferred? He did say the “effect” approach on the Video tab would be a better choice for slow motion effects.

Not seeing how changing the field order will deinterlace the video. It will only reverse the field order. I am also seeing progressive having the effect of deinterlacing the the image, which is what I would expect. Or perhaps I completely misunderstood him.

My guess is that the function isn’t so much switching the field order (field dominance) but duplicating one or the other field. Hence it appears to deinterlace since there is no motion between two upper or two lower fields. Just a guess of course because this is yet another example of missing documentation in what is very incomplete docs to which Apple has not yet made an “official” PDF of.

In the first tab (General View) he is just interpreting the footage.
No really de-interlacin nothing.
There is an option to interpret Alpha also.
Same than in FCP Browser.

In the De-interlace filter there are to option for duplicating lines (lower/Upper) and one for blending.
In most cases this would be the best option.
Better than the default FCP de-interlace.

I haven’t tried FCPX with any interlaced stuff, but I expect FCPX to manage automatically field order issues.
FCPX is designed for modern codec properly flagged on Field Order.
I guess FCPX will de-interlace the footage when dropped to a Progressive sequence.
I guess will shift-fields when needed.

As someone who spends a lot of time dealing with compression apps, de-interlace is not a simple thing. Things like motion compensation and edge detection can come into play. Blending or duplicating fields often yields poor results. This is why it’s important to know what FCPX is doing intrinsically so we can look for other options when optimal results are needed.

Sure.
Compressor has a “Motion Compensation” option for de-interlacing, but without much control, and a “Motion Compensation” filter without Motion Masks is a waist of time and and unnecessary picture processing.
I think that as default options Duplicating Fields and Blending are OK.
I expect Re_Vision FieldsKit and Nattress like filters available for FCPX.

BTW, the guy of the tutorial probably chose the worst example he could have done for checking field order.
Hummingbirds flies back and forward and backward and the wings moves to fast to see iwhere are they going. Impossible to know by eye is is upper or lower. But is HDV.
