  • Degraded video plugin?

Posted by Jedowdle on November 10, 2005 at 5:30 pm

I’m looking for a good way to simulate old videos, like old VHS tapes that have been left in a closet for years, surveillance tapes, etc. Obviously, there’s great plugins for degrading to look like old film (scratches, dust, etc,), but are there comparable things for video?

I’m working on some plugins that do this, but perhaps the easiest thing to do is dub your fotoage to VHS, mangle the tape a bit, and record back to DV for capture….

I need to keep my timecode intact, and I’d like to have more control over the degradation than that. Any other ideas?

I have been looking for one of these for FCP for some time.

There are more options if you have even limited AE knowledge, like the BadTV filter from The Foundry:

That’s a good one! Are there others along the same lines as this?

[Jedowdle] “I need to keep my timecode intac”

Not sure what you mean by that? Any plug-in that creates a new clip from your video will give you new timecode. The only way to keep timecode of the clip is to apply a filter to that specific clip in that timeline. Which begs the question: Why do you need to keep the timecode? Or How come you can’t replace the clip with exactly the same time?

Bad TV by The Foundry is one of the few I know, but I’m sure they are others. I think Boris Continum has one…Either way, it would need to be compatible with FCP to use it in the timeline.
