  • Degradation in reversed footage

Posted by Alan Brunettin on December 31, 2005 at 6:41 am

I have been messing with FCP since v1.2.5. I am now on v5. In that time I’ve enjoyed playing with the reverse direction feature. Good times. But the footage always had the same quality as the footage in the original direction.

However, now that I am doing a “serious” doc in FCP 5 and need the reverse direction for some clips, I am finding the quality rather degraded as compared to the original footage. Is this because now–unlike in the past–I am shooting 24p? Is there somethng new in FCP5 that needs to be addressed when one wants to reverse footage?

Is there some secret I need to learn now in order to get my reversed footage to look as good as the normal footage?

Is your video processing set to “Best” quality? FCP 5 defaults to “Normal” quality.

I have a G reverse plugin that might work better for you.

To Mr. Biscardi: Ya know, I just cannot get a handle on these various levels of render quality in FCP. I believe I have it set to the highest quality (tho I don’t see a “best”). This is what I have it set to: Safe RT; Scrub High Quality; Playback Quality: Dynamic; Playback Frame Rate: Full; Multiclip Playback; Record to Tape: Full Quality. So beats me. Is this best quality?

    BTW, Love Good Eats.

To Mr. Natress: Your Film Effects suite looks great but I don’t see anything–in that particularly, nor anywhere else on your site–about “G Reverse” Where would I find that?

[mingusman] “So beats me. Is this best quality?”

It’s under the Video Processing of System Settings. you can look in the manual or under the Help Menu for further guidance on where to find it.

Playback Quality set to Dynamic is your problem. Set it to FULL and make sure that you render the file even if it a RT Preview. Render with the dark green render bar checked in Sequence>Render.

I agree that it is confusing if you don’t know the array of different settings that you can have. You may want to read up on it. There’s a good article on kenstone.net about it.
