    total newbie looking for a way to deform an imported OBJ derived from a 3D body scan. we want to simulate weight gain/loss as realistically as possible
    Can Cinema 4D do this? I’ve had no luck in Poser. I have a demo of C4D 9 and the OBJ opens up OK. I ‘ve never used C4D and would like an idea of my chances of success before committing to the program

    Many Thanks

    It’s certainly possible. How easy or hard it will be will depend a lot on the quality of your model. 3d scans often result in iffy geometry in terms of having zillions of polygons, awkward triangulation, reversed normals, etc., etc.

    There are a few ways you would approach it, or you could use a combination of:

    *parametric deformers, such as the bulge, taper, and bend deformers;

    *keyframed point-level animation (PLA);

    *morphing (requires Mocca or a plugin).

    As far as modeling the PLA/morph targets, I would use a lot of the Mesh Brush and the Magnet Tool.

    Thanks Adam,

    the scan has been simplified with an overlaid Poser mesh applied via Cyslice. I’ve been able to open it and do a bit of basic manual tweaking. I’ll give your suggestions a go.
    Do you know of anyone else trying to do this? Or a tutorial on the tools you suggest?

    Oh, Cyslice–cool. 🙂

    Hold on a sec, I’ll put together a quick and dirty vid tut for you.

    Okay, here’s the promised mini-tut: https://www.3danvil.com/tutorials/FatMorph/fatmorph.html

    If you want to download the file you can replace the “.html” with “.swf”.

    Hey Adam,
    brilliant!
    I can see that this might be just what we want.
    Great tutorial – unfortunately I can’t get sound – is there any?
    I open up in QuickTime 7 ( Intel iMac – OS 10.4) and the sound track setting keeps defaulting to minus infinity no matter what I do 🙂

    Cheers

    Sorry, it was a silent pic. 🙂 I’d be happy to explain anything that wasn’t clear.

    Very impressive tute Adam, many thanks.

    This could well be what we’re after

    However . . . I don’t seem able to replicate your actions on my system. (Mac OS 10.4 CD4 9.012 ( demo as yet). )
    When you go to the Tags menu and open Character Tags/ Morph . . . I don’t have that range . I only have CD4, Clothilde, Dynamics, Mocca and Sketch.

    Also my Attributes panel looks different

    Will I need version 10 and specific plugins perhaps?
