Definition of Motion Graphic Terms
Hi Guys,
I was hoping someone could clear up something for me. Im arguing with a colleague of the definition of some motion graphics based terms. Could somebody please define the following to prove who is right?
Astin
Ident
Sting
In addition can somebody please tell us the correct term for the graphics that appear in the lower third of the screen with information on (usually somebodys name and title)

I’ve always called a Lower Third a Lower Third. Sometimes its called a Super. When I worked in the news if was often times called “Chyron” which is referring to the program that generated the lower third.
As for Ident I would turn to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ident
As for Astin, do you mean astons?

Sorry, yes I meant Aston. Can you define this term for me please? My colleague uses the term ‘aston’ for a lower third, Im not so sure, is he correct?

lower third is called a LOWER THIRD!
never heard of any of that other stuff. All my years in broadcast in Chicago at Fox and CBS in LA and I never heard any of those terms.
A lower third is a graphic that is created and exists in the lower third part of the screen. This may or may not include text. Many facilities do use a machine called a Chyron to generate text on screen, but at least
in LA and Chicago, we used photoshop for all of our lower thirds and broadcast graphic stills, lower thirds and everything else.
Its the future…. pretty spooky. fyi I have worked with some really nice, but seriously old school broadcast guys who used terms I just never heard of. Slow to changeSuperNova

Astons is slang for a lower third as well. It’s a term used in the UK. That is because the Aston Broadcast Systems generate text like a Chyron. Hope this helps you win your bet.
