It didn’t used to do this but somehow I recently got it so whenever I make a simple shape layer in an AE comp, it defaults to starting out at the odd opacity level of 67%. This is not the standard opacity setting for a layer that you can adjust by simply pressing T (that setting is already at 100%). Rather, this is a different transparency setting well nested within Contents » Rectangle1 » Fill1 » Opacity. This nested setting location of course makes it very annoying to keep digging deep to bring the level back to 100% each time I make a shape layer. How do I make it go back to defaulting new shape layers to have a Fill Opacity of 100%?

    Thanks

It sounds like somehow the default opacity for shape layers is set to 67%, and that would be in your prefs file. You can trash your prefs and start AE, which will make AE appear as a “fresh” install with all your preferences set back to default values. OR you can open up your prefs file and correct just the default value for shape fill:
    1. With AE closed, open the text document “Adobe After Effects 8.0 Prefs.txt” (I’m on CS3 / Windows, your file name may be slightly different depending on your version).
    2. Scroll down to the heading “Shape Graphic preferences (Fill)”. This is almost towards the end of the document.. scrolled appx. 95% down.
    3. A little ways under this heading you’ll probably find
“Opacity” = “0.670000” (or a number very close to that).
    4. Change this number to “1.000000”.
    5. Save the txt file, and start AE.

You should have a default fill opacity of 100% now…?

    Kind regards,
    Eric

PS. On my Windows machine, the prefs file is located at:

    > Documents and Settings
    >> Administrator
    >>> Application data
    >>>> Adobe
    >>>>> After Effects
    >>>>>> 8.0

    Hi!
I’ve installed After Effects CS4 recently, and I’m having a little problem. When I use the text tool, or try to create shapes, they don’t show up with a fill or stroke color. I have checked everything I know, ie. i use fill, i use true type fonts, and even checked the prefs file. When I type, the cursor moves like it’s supposed to…and I can mark the “text” like it’s some text there…but I can’t see it. What’s wrong? The same thing with shapes. Oh, and another thing. I can see the text or shape in the tiny little screen in the top left corner of my workspace. Please help!

    Kind regards
    Anders

Thank you sooooo much. I was literally pulling my hair out. I have no idea how the default got changed, but mine got changed to 0.380000 or 38%. I kept trying to figure it out until i opened the shape layer and saw that fill was 38%.

I was running adobe after effects cs5.

Once again, thanks. I have printed this thread just in case

I’m having the exact same issue, but I’m on CC 2015.4 and I can’t find the prefs.txt file. Does anyone know where I could find it?

[Max Gurel] ” but I’m on CC 2015.4 and I can’t find the prefs.txt file.”

there is not 2015.4 for After effects. if you want to locate the preferences file go to edit->preferences and at the bottom you will have a comfortable button to go straight to it

BTW if you don’t want to mess with the preferences file and don’t mind resetting it completely you could just use the reset preferences command: https://blogs.adobe.com/kevinmonahan/2013/10/15/reset-after-effects-preferences/
