Decklink+Vegas+Compressed
Posted by Rick Mac on August 31, 2005 at 2:38 amI would like to use Decklink SP with Vegas 6 to capture from BetaSP deck to a compressed codec, so that I don’t need a LARGE fast disk array. Then edit in realtime from timeline. Is this possible? I’m trying to find some middle ground, 4:2:2 compressed SP quality instead of DV color space.

August 31, 2005 at 5:43 amHi Rick,
Unfortunately that is not possible at this time. Three changes would need to take place in order for this to be possible:
1. Vegas would require an update from Sony to address compressed codecs via the DirectShow filters in our DeckLink drivers.
2. The DirectShow filters in our DeckLink drivers would need to be updated to invoke certain compressed codecs which support 4:2:2 color space.
3. Compressed codecs would need to be available in Windows so that there was some kind compressed codec to invoke other than DV. Currently such codecs are not present in Windows XP but hopefully Microsoft might add these in the future. Another option is to adopt third party commercial codecs but many of these are quite expensive and can cost much more than the DeckLink card itself.
We are continuing to look at options which might be suitable for use with Vegas but I don’t expect any quick solutions.
On the Mac platform we have global access to QuickTime codecs including compressed codecs such as PhotoJPEG. This supports 4:2:2 color space and is very nice quality.
One of our support staff is going to test using Blackmagic Deck Control for Windows to capture to the PhotoJPEG codec and then see if the resulting file works OK in Vegas 6. I really don’t know if this will work but we’ll try and let you know.

I’ve just heard back that this worked perfectly. So as long as you don’t mind capturing via Blackmagic Deck Control, you can take the captured QuickTime movie which has been PhotoJPEG-encoded, and it seems to work fine in Vegas 6 and also outputs through DeckLink.
You will need to have QuickTime 6.5 installed.

August 31, 2005 at 6:02 pmThanks Luke for checking into this for me! Just to make sure I understand, after capturing PhotoJPEG in Deck Control for Windows, I can then edit and preview without further trancoding within Vegas 6. Is that correct?
Thanks for your kind assistance…..Rick.

Yes, that is correct. We just did some quick testing but this seems to work fine and no transcoding was required. We would need to do more thorough testing to advertize this as a “feature” but we played around with it for a while and everything seemed to work just fine.
