We’re building a new system for my workstation – It’ll be an i7, 12 gigs ram, and a Quadro graphics card. We’ve got most of the pieces in place, except for an I/O card.

For software, the system will use CS4, and it’s replacing a system that currently uses After Effects quite heavily. I imagine that PPro will be used some, and that’s the factor that’s encouraging picking an I/O card. Here is what I’m looking for in a card:

    – Previews on After Effects
    – Ability to ingest footage from SDI at various bitrates/codecs
    – Realtime HDV previews in PPro

The system will probably work mainly in HDV, since that’s our current acquisition format for field work. I’d rather not do strictly uncompressed for the Premiere editing. I’ve done a bit of research into both the Axio and Blackmagic products (namely Decklink and Multibridge), but I’d be very curious to hear from users of either about the actual workflow experience and what the systems are capable of. Thanks!

OK, so if you aren’t interested in accelerated render and export, a suite of real time filters (like Chroma Key and advanced primary & secondary color correction), a broadcast qualityframe-based compressed codec (I-frame MPEG2) with adjustable compression and alpha channel support, MULTI stream native HDV playback and HDV capture window support, you could go for the DeckLink. Otherwise, I’d take a closer look at Axio.

Note however that ATI graphics cards are preferred to Nvidia for use with Axio.

Fair enough. With the ATI/Nvidia cards – Is the Nvidia card necessarily incompatible with the Axio? What kind of issues might I run into? I doubt that my Quadro card will change…

It should be OK. Here is the list of validated graphics cards:

You should also probably check on your MOBO:
