  • Decklink to Aja to Decklink – color change?

Posted by Matthew London on February 25, 2007 at 7:56 pm

    Hi,
My Final Cut Pro film is in PAL 10 bit Uncompressed, captured with a DecklinkPro from DigiBeta masters. The film was recently color corrected on a system with an Aja card. I was not there for the CC process (my partner handled it) so I dont know how it looked starting out on the Aja, but now that I have it back on my main system with the Decklink Pro, things seem a little dark. I’m not sure if this is simply because of the adjustments performed during the CC, or if it is as a result of having the work done on the Aja system, and then playing back on my DecklinkPro system.

Is it possible that the Aja codec was displaying the image brighter than the Decklink, and that the CC work is appearing darker to me as a result of the codec change?

    thank you,
    matthew

    Hi Matthew,

What version of our drivers do you have on your capture machine?

What is the codec used to capture. We currently use Apple’s Uncompressed 4:2:2 10-bit codec and so should AJA.

What is the CC application used?

    regards

    Hi Kristian,

The Decklink drivers used to capture were current as of March 2006.
Just recently, I updated to the current driver version from your website.
Capturing was done with Blackmagic 10bit Uncompressed 4:2:2

I dont know what codec the Aja machine was using, but I could find out.
CC was done using FCP’s built-in ThreeWay color corrector, as well as brodcast safe filter.

When you say “We currently use Apple’s Uncompressed 4:2:2 10-bit codec and so should AJA.”, does that mean that the Blackmagic 10bit Uncompressed codec is the same as Apple’s?

    Thanks,
    Matthew

    Hi,

I think you might be confused between the easy setups and the codecs being captured. The easy setups may be “Blackmagic 10-bit” but the codecs captured should be the Uncompressed 4:2:2 10-bit codec which belongs to Apple. The best way to check this is to look at your capture presets editor for the capture settings you’re using in Final Cut Pro.

[mlondon] “When you say “We currently use Apple’s Uncompressed 4:2:2 10-bit codec and so should AJA.”, does that mean that the Blackmagic 10bit Uncompressed codec is the same as Apple’s?”

Yes, the Blackmagic 10-bit codec which is available only in After Effects has the same fourcc as the Apple Uncompressed 10-bit codec (v210).

I’d consider the possibility that the monitors and ambient lighting are different in the 2 suites. I’ve been in “online” suites where the monitors did not have a correct black level. Just something to check, if you haven’t already.
