Decklink HD Pro & non drop frame timecode
Posted by Greg Becker on August 27, 2005 at 3:15 amI have a project where I am capturing Betacam SP tapes SDI from a J3. All of the tapes were shot with non drop frame timecode. When the clips are captured, Premiere/Decklink assigns drop frame code to all of the clips creating an error between whats been captured and the timecode on tape. Of course the client has window dubs and is wondering why the timecodes are off. Other than re-striping all of the tapes with drop frame code, is there a way to make the decklink capture see the tapes as non drop frame code? Anyone out there experienced this and have a solution?

I also have decklink stuff, first off when you created the project it allows you to set time df/ndf… It defaults to df.. that effects the timeline and all the clips that are captured…”ie. makes ALL clips that TC.” It wont just look at the actual TC and capture it correctly. Where they came up with the name PremierPRO baffles me.. So the bad news is to get the TC rite you should recapure with project setting in NDF. The blackmagic default is DF. Now for some good news. “maybe cause I never tried it”
I know there is a way to change the TC of a clip something like highlite the clip in the bin and in one of the pull down menu’s there something to do with TC or change TC check it out. I dont know if it allows df to ndf changes.. Premiere deals with TC kinda wierd. It marks the first frame of a clip and then just counts frames.. so if you know what the first frame of your clips actual TC’s are you might be able to change them then hopefully everything would jive. “remember the :/; thing”.. Also under projects settings “in the opened Project” change it to NDF and see if that converted all the clips.. sorry for the ramble
good luck

August 27, 2005 at 5:40 pmThanks Ray. So it’s an all or nothing proposition, either the project is drop frame or non-drop frame. Of course my project has a mixture of both. I looked at the timecode menu item before, this will change the entire timecode number associated with the clip. It does not appear to change between drop frame and non drop frame tc. I’m going to try importing a non drop frame clip into a drop frame project to see what happens. I’ll try the reverse as well. Greg

August 27, 2005 at 7:37 pmOkay. Tried importing a clip captured in a non drop frame project into a drop frame project and it reverts to drop frame code. Looks like Premiere only captures the start frame and the number of frames for each clip when its captured. Then timecode is generated “on the fly”. So if the project is drop frame all of the clips show drop frame code. If the project is non drop frame, all of the clips (even if they are the same ones imported from a drop frame project) show non drop code. Seems like it would be easy for the programers to add a flag that sets the clip to the right timecode type. Maybe version 2.0? Doesn’t help me now for my project that’s an off line edit with mixed timecode types. Looks like I’m moving the project over to the Avid room.

yes its a nitemare when you have both ntsc timecodes. Hopefully ADOBE will one day listen to editors and get there premadonna head out of there A$$. But i guess the lesson here is “you get what you pay for”! and yes I’ll continue to use there product till another comp product gets it togather..

August 29, 2005 at 2:54 amI can not believe that after all of its versions premiere still has this issue. I regularly mix shot stuff (DF) and Telecine stuff (NDF) and this want work at all. My Krappy Speedrazor even did this right, and I have been cutting movies and docu work for years. I was about to move to Premiere and Decklink. Now back to the drawing board.
