Decklink HD Extreme card question?

Hi,

I’d still love to know what you do with your video once you’ve captured it via Firewire. It’s only by knowing how people use different formats of video that we know why there is a need for those formats. In the case of 720p25, I’m still puzzled about what you intend to do with it after it has been captured, eg broadcast or DVD’s?

It will end up on DVD Luke. But that is not an issue. I need to do colour grading off that timeline and BM don’t support it for 720p/25p which is a real bloody drag. All I can get is a still frame on my external CRT broadcast grading monitor.

I had an email from one guy at BM, who told me that they will never support it as nobody in the world shoots 720p/25p. Funny guy.

Hi,

Thanks for letting me know that you intend to deliver on DVD and I’m assuming that is a standard definition DVD at this stage so you’ll need to keep an eye on the colour space conversion if you are colour grading in HDV and then down converting to SD.

While I can’t promise you 720p25 support, I can tell you that it’s still in a queue of requested features and no one here has decided to dismiss support of this format so I’m intrigued by the email you received.

Thanks Luke. I believe JVC UK amongst other UK customers of the JVC ProHD range of camcorders that shoot in 720p/25p are going to be in touch with Blackmagic USA to also request it.

Hi,

I noticed in one of your postings to another forum, you mentioned that you are taking delivery of a JVC HDV dedicated deck. The HDMI output of the JVC BR-HD50U can output 1080i50 when your tape format is 720p25. We’re just about to ship the Intensity and DeckLink HD Studio cards. Both of these cards allow you to capture and play back via HDMI so you can choose to capture to an uncompressed format or choose a professional compressed codec if uncompressed is not an option for you. In addition to the HDMI input and output featured on both the Intensity and DeckLink HD Studio, the latter card also has RS-422 device control and analog inputs and outputs. You could use the component HD analog outputs to connect to your CRT monitor and the picture quality would be excellent. Almost all CRT’s are interlaced and so this workflow might work well for you. The JVC BR-HD50U deck includes an RS-422 port so the DeckLink HD Studio would take advantage of this instead of using Firewire device control. It’s a somewhat different approach to your original plan but I thought I’d mention it in case it is of interest.
