  • Decklink for Non-PCI EXPRESS G5? Help!

Posted by Tj Fernando on October 17, 2006 at 4:24 am

    Hey Guys,

I’m looking for an uncompressed capture card for my G5, but my system was before they released motherboards with PCI Express. Its a Dual 2 GHZ. What is the best/highest quality solution? Is there a decklink (or Kona, etc.) card that will capture uncompressed HD with close to the performance of a PCI-X card? Is there any way to get a PCI-X motherboard or use of the PCI-X decklink’s without having to buy a new computer?

    Thanks for the help,

    Trevor

Look in your manual P60-61 for info on your G5.
If it was bought or built in 2003 your Dual 2 GHZ G5 is PCI-X

Download coconutIdentityCard to find out when your Mac was built.

    Hi Trevor,

Can you please check whether your G5 has PCI or PCI-X slots? To do so, go to the Apple menu and select “About this Mac”. Then click on the More Info button and you will see the System Profiler will launch.

Look in the System Profiler under Hardware and then Memory to see if your G5 has 4 or 8 memory slots for RAM. The PCI-X and G5’s have 8 slots compared with PCI (33 MHz) G5’s which only have 4 slots for RAM.

If your G5 has 8 memory slots, then it definitely contains PCI-X slots and you can use the DeckLink HD Pro 4:4:4 (PCI-X) card for uncompressed HD and SD capture and playback via SDI. This is the same great quality as you would obtain using PCI Express (PCIe) on the newer G5’s and the Mac Pro.

There were two models of G5/2.0 GHz dual processor. One model had PCI-X slots which are perfect for use with the DeckLink HD Pro 4:4:4 (PCI-X) card. The other G5 model had slower PCI 33 MHz slots which were unsuitable for use with DeckLink cards. Hopefully your Mac has PCI-X slots.

Please let me know which type of slots you have in your G5.
