On a budget here and need a card with both component and SDI. Decklink Extreme seems to be the best bet. However, I only have a G4 FW800 to put it in. A Promax salesman advised me against it and said they wouldn’t recommend it for a G4 and wouldn’t even sell it to me. Maybe they’re just being cautious…

Has anyone used a Decklink Extreme with a FW800 before and if so were there any problems?

Upgrading to a G5 isn’t in the budget right now.

    Thanks,

    Kurt

    Hi Kurt,

If you are running Mac OS X 10.3.8 and FCP 4.5, then any G4/800 MHz dual processor or faster will be fine with the DeckLink Extreme. If you are running Mac OS X 10.4.3 and FCP 5, then a dual processor G4/1.25 GHz or faster will be fine with the DeckLink Extreme.

The FW800 drive might or might not be fast enough for uncompressed 10-bit capture. It would probably be fine for 8-bit uncompressed or alternatively you could capture in any of the DV, DV50 or PhotoJPEG formats.
