I’m wondering if anyone can clear up some confusion for me using the Decklink HD with Premiere Pro for DV projects.

Is capturing with the Decklink DV codec meant to be done via SDI or Firewire?

Then, if it is for Firewire capture, is it better or worse than Microsoft’s DV codec you can capture to in Premiere? I’ve got a DV sourced project and am trying to figure out the best workflow to get the best quality (without turning the 30 hours of source footage into uncompressed).

    Thanks for any input,

    Stewart,

DV is exactly the same whether captured via fireire or SDI. There is no compelling reason to capture via SDI that I can think of, and since firewire also handles deck control through the firewire cable, its simply easier.

In addition, there is also no difference (at least in theory) bewteen FCP DV and DV on a Microsoft box, because DV is a 1 to 1 copy of digital information that is not (again in theory) affected or degraded during tranfer from one medium to another (tape to hard drive).
