Decklink 720 to 1080 output is not working
Posted by Zeliha Bozkurt on January 18, 2008 at 10:22 amHi I am working on a project using DVC PRO HD 720P30 codec. I am monitoring video thorough Apple Cinema via Display HD Link box. (v 2.4)
When I set the ouptput processing to 720p to 1080i I am getting artifacts on the monitor, and it looks really bad.
System specs are: Intel Mac 8 core with 4Gig Ram and FCP V.5.1.4
HD Link Extreme. v 6.1PS: I have another suite with same specifications with exactly the same problem.
Is there a compatibility issue here?
Any ideas.

Thanks.”
Ah, well at least you tried. Sorry I can’t help, I’m an AJA guy, but I’m sure someone will be along shortly with some suggestions.

January 18, 2008 at 3:29 pmWhich kind of artefacts are you experiencing? I hope you understand that it’s not easy to get from 30p to 60i.

Actually, with AJA Konas it is. It’s complete pristine broadcast quality here with the Kona 3’s.

January 18, 2008 at 5:11 pmThe Decklink cards aren’t designed to cross-convert 720p to 1080i…only the Kona 3 does that. What are you doing to try to get a 1080 signal?

yeah, I was going to ask where Zeliha found that option.
I don’t really have a need for it myself, but I wish BMD would implement that as well as 720P to SD downconversion in hardware.
(it only does 1080)The next I/O device I buy will be a Kona 3 or I/O HD.

January 23, 2008 at 3:05 pmHi
Sorry for the delay in response.

Yes it does but only for monitoring purposes. You can turn this option on System Preferences>Other>Decklink. And once in Decklink select Procecessing tab and then select the Output Processing 720pHD to 1080i HD. This sets HD software cross conversion on video output.
The other options are HD to SD Letterbox 16:9 and HD to SD Anamorphic 16:9
Hope this helps.
PS: I have been using this function for the past two years and never had a problem with it. I am only experiencing this artefacts issue since I have upgraded two of my macs to intel macs.
Not sure how to solve it. No one on the Blackmagic Decklink Forum replied 🙁 I am not impressed.

Zeliha

I agree with Shane, it is my understanding that the BMD cards do not do cross-conversions at all.

January 18, 2011 at 3:28 pmI realize this post is a couple years old, but it still comes up when I search for the problem. As an update, I just output a 720p sequence from Final Cut through a Blackmagic HD Extreme cross converted to 1080i to a Sony HDCAM deck.
The trick is to use the 720p 59.94 easy set up… if you use the 23.978 you get crazy artifacts on the cross convert. There’s also about a two frame lag so do a test and adjust your in point on layoff accordingly.
But again… a blackmagic card will do it… given you have the right settings.
