    Deciphering a system crash log

    Yesterday I inserted two new bare Seagate hard drives into my CRU-DataPort hard drive enclosure. The hard drive enclosure is connected to my Mac through eSATA wires connected into a Sonnet – Tempo eSATA Card. When I did this the computer crashed. I’m trying to determine if the problem is with the hard drives, the hard drive enclosure, or the eSATA card. When I turned my Mac back on the error report had a line near the top which said:

    Can I assume based on this line that the error lies at the card? Or can I not determine it from this.

    The reason I’m having so much trouble diagnosing this is because sometimes all of this works, and sometimes all of it doesn’t. I’ve already destroyed three brand-new hard drives by using this setup… but maybe I just keep getting bad batches of drives.

    It’s probably safe to assume that this is a sonnet driver bug. The next step would be to set keep_syms to 1 in nvram (google for the exact syntax). Then you’ll see the stack trace get filled in rather than being a bunch of hex addresses. Send this to sonnet for review. (what you have not isn’t very useful to them).
    The kernel log may have other useful information (/var/log/kernel.log).
