  • Dealing with Spanned Clips from Firestore FS-100

    Hi Everyone,

I shot some interviews yesterday for a doc I’m working on and a strange thing happened.

Most of the interviews I shot lasted at least 30 minutes and we rolled the entire time. There was very little stopping. So I was expecting a few very long clips to import into Avid Express (v5.7). Instead, I got a lot of short clips. This is annoying because the clips end mid sound bite in many cases.

We shot on the Focus Enhancements FS-100– the first time I’ve used it. NOT Panasonic P2 cards. I’ve never run in to this problem with P2 cards. Anyway, the time code remains consistent from clip to clip so I can always just butt the clips up together and there’s no break in my bites. But, who wants all that extra work, and, it makes logging and transcribing a real pain.

    Any ideas???

    Thanks
    Matt

    UPDATE————

Okay, so I just remembered that the Focus Enhancements FS-100 is a FAT 32 drive and makes a new clip when your file reaches 2 gigs. So is there a way to get Avid Express or Media Composer to combine all of these 2 gig clips back into a single clip in the bin???

you can select all the clips and use “auto sequence” that will create a new sequence with everything in order of timecode. You can then use that sequence as your source (gotta drag and drop it into the source monitor, double click will load it into the record)
that might be the quickest thing to do

    Hey Scott,

Thanks so much for the reply. I actually figured that out about an hour ago. It was a relief to know that at the very least I can still use the interviews… I could never ask these people to re-shoot. They’re in their 90s and didn’t want to go on cam anyway.

The big issue however is this: Does Avid not combine spanned clips from the FS-100? I’m calling them spanned clips but maybe it’s not actually the same as a spanned clip from 2 P2 cards. Maybe multiple clips from the same shot aren’t considered spanned clips… I did notice that the last clip file only had one entry logged.

    Thanks again!

There is a setting in the Firestore to increase the length of the clips – but I think the max is 13 minutes. So strictly speaking, they are not spanned clips, just seperate clips and Avid sees them as such.

So the multiple clips is more of a Firestore thing. It’s a pain, but I just sort the clips by date / time, and alt-drag them into the the sequence bin (or just drag them – I think the alt drag is old school Avid…)
