I’m dealing with a 7 camera shoot (2 HDV, 5 Canon Vixia) and have been having a hard time editing due to extremely choppy playback. I figured I should render each individual angle as AVI to smooth things out (Vegas handles AVI’s with no problems) but didn’t know what format would be the best translation for producing an HD DVD product.

Life is a dream, awoken by death.

You didn’t say how powerful your PC is but 7 tracks of HD is going to slow down any PC. I would try a tool like VASST GearShift. It will convert all of your footage to DV Widescreen AVI which will edit smoothly. Then it will swap back the HD content for the final render. This is called proxy editing. You can swap back and forth between the DV proxies and HD as many times as you’d like.

In the interest of full disclosure I work at VASST so don’t take my work for it. Download the 15-day free trial and use it and see if it fits your workflow. We provide full support during the trial period so we can help you if you need it. There is a video link on the product page with a tutorial. Here it is as well: GearShift Tutorial. (it’s a bit low res by today’s standards but you get the idea)

I can attest to having used it and it is a terrific tool and easy to use. Int his day and age of huge files why waste time and resources editing the full scale versions? Try it and you will agree.
