    Hey gents,

I’m working on a piece of media for a live show. The production designer has provided me with a very specifically constructed AI file that essentially contains a bunch of geometric elements that need to scroll upwards. The plan: take said file and move it’s position up over time in the comp to create upward motion. I’ve built the comp, done various things (I have used the AI file layer several times in the comp to layer up effects etc.). The results look great in preview. The problem is that when the renderer hits any of these layers it crashes. The AI file resolution is 1038 by 7323. I am using it in 3D with lights, etc. I haven’t tried to use a file like this with such HUGE vertical resolution in a long time. I dimly recall previous experiences where source files above 4k make AE choke. I’m using CS4 on an Mac Pro Octacore with 16 gigs of RAM. Am I hosed because of this source file size ? Will I have to recreate it at under 4k somehow, or is there an easy fix ? I tried rendering with the OpenGL renderer, Which got it by the layer, but then it seemed to be rendering wrong (the position and scale of the layer was all wonky). Trying to avoid a total rebuild here (the project is working very sweetly until I push the damn render button)… Been wrestling with this one all night… Gonna take a nap now and hope for an answer from the universe when I awake. Opinions much appreciated.

    Best,

Have you tried purging the RAM during the render?
It’s in the secret menu item under preferences. Hold down shift when selecting preferences.

That sounded extremely promising… Alas, alas, AE did not agree… Guess I’m jumping into some work arounds here…

Solution: I rebuilt the parts of the big tall res at under 4k, everything is fine. Dang is that a hassle though.

    Wish I could convince AE it could do it… “I think I can, I think I can…”
