de focus effect
Posted by Tom Ma on January 30, 2008 at 5:29 pmI am looking for a de focus effect that simulates true camera defocus
It needs to be high end and have lots of controls for bloom , shape (hexaginal, triangular etc)
The standard fast blur will not cut it here.any suggestions?

January 30, 2008 at 6:24 pmWell, Adobe includes the Blur & Sharpen > Lens Blur effect, which has controls for the shape of the iris, iris curvature, aperture, specular highlights and noise.
There are, of course, other 3rd party options. Many of which you can try for free, and three of which I found on Adobe’s After Effects plug-in page:
https://www.adobe.com/products/plugins/aftereffects/
Here are the ones I found:

January 30, 2008 at 7:57 pmactually, last week at After Effects New York, Todd from GenArts showed a really nice Lens Blur Plug-in. I had never seen their tools, and was duly impressed:

I’m not sure what the effect was called but it had incredible control over the look of the blur. It should be a part of Box 3: Adjust, Blur+Sharpen, Composite & Distort.

January 30, 2008 at 10:22 pmSapphire has several different plug-ins you can use. RackDefocus will simulate a camera defocus, while ZDefocus takes a depth buffer to due a depth-of-field defocus. Aharon is referring to our Convolve plug-in which allows you to input a black & white Kernal as your lens shape for a custom lens defocus. You can download a free 3 week trial from:

Thanks for that link! I remember seeing those plug-ins before, but I couldn’t remember where to find them during our last round of purchasing… They’re in the bookmarks now! ZbornToy looks amazing too.
