  • De-embedding SDI audio?

    Hi guys,

I was wondering what the best way is to strip out the embedded SDI audio signal coming out of my Decklink Pro, so I can output from my PC to either separated digital audio or balanced analogue audio? Also, I need a way to capture the same way?

Currently, our facility does not use embedded SDI audio and so the patch bay is based on either separate 2/4 channel digital or analogue I/Os

    I saw this: https://www.miranda.com/product.php?i=220&l=1

Could I use this with the SDI inputs/outputs on my Decklink to do the job?
I use component video cables for monitoring. *IDEALLY* I want to be sending/receiving the best quality video I can still….will this converter degrade my video signal (I imagine it will need both my SDI in+out for this? Can’t see a way of getting the audio I need without tying up the SDI cables.)

Thanks for any help you can offer. It is a pain to have to grab/put out audio via a different system or laid off to CD!

unlike your subject title, it seems that you want to be able to embed, de embed, convert to analog YRB, and capture from analog YRB. We can discuss converters all day long, and the Miranda you listed works great in that one direction – but for all the money you will spend on assorted Miranda, AJA, and Cobalt Digital converters- why not just bite the bullet and buy the Blackmagic Decklink Extreme, that has all the converters as part of the package. I know that you don’t want to get rid of your perfectly good board, but all these outboard converters cost MONEY, and you could ultimately save money by buying the correct Blackmagic product in the first place – and not only save money, but all the wiring mess that will be created by it.

    Hi Jimmy,

The DeckLink Pro already outputs 8 channels (4 stereo pairs) of SPDIF audio via the 4 RCA connectors. The audio is de-embedded from the SDI stream.

    Thanks Bob, Kristian,

Yes, perhaps I should have opted for the Extreme for more flexibility..but I initially bought the Pro just for component monitoring in AFX and Photoshop, but since adding a RAID-0 and slightly faster proc it turns out I can capture/output SDI video via the Decklink aswell now, instead of our Clipstation. I usually only work with GFX and a touch of compositing, but I figured it would be useful if I could grab/output the audio aswell if possible…

So Kristian – can I use the 4 sets of SPDIF for both monitoring and outputting digital audio? I thought the SPDIFs were only for monitoring? That’d be great if I could you one pair to output/input stereo to/from our patch bay…And perhaps one of the other sets for some Edirol monitors or similar?

    Is this possible?

At our facility we have two FCP systems with Decklink HDPro cards and Miranda SDI-analog converters. Of course our routers and all other systems (smoke, flame, eQ, iQ etc) are SDI with embedded audio. And our broadcast monitors are SDI. This has worked for us for the past 2 years. At the time we set these up (end 04) there were no Multibridges.

Recently when we added two more setups using existing Decklink HDPro cards, we evaluated various converters as well as our good experience with Miranda. Eventually we opted for two Multibridge Extreme. These work as SDI audio embedders, give us the option of connecting a analog component monitor, use a SP deck for ingest directly and are generally stable. One unit was DOA but the dealer replaced it instantly.

I think you too will find the Multibridge Extreme the most cost-effective solution. And if you were to upgrade to a new PCIe Mac, you can use the MBExt directly with a small PCIe card, as we too would have done had we had acces to a PCI-X card for the MBExt.

Thanks for the info Neil…the Multibridge does indeed look like a great product – but it is

I love the Miranda converters but that one list for over $1k here, the more standalone converters I see the more impressed I am by the multibridge, for the price it does so much. Sorry I know that’s probably not what you wanted to hear but if you are still looking for a deembedder I think the Graham Patten AEDM ones are a bit cheaper.
