DCI-XYZ to 709 LUT
Posted by Daniel Christie on April 16, 2014 at 5:18 amHi,
Can anyone point me in the direction of a DCI-XYZ to Rec. 709 LUT. I realise this is going to a smaller colourspace, but the source material is 709 that was converted to XYZ anyway.
Thanks,
Daniel

April 16, 2014 at 11:26 pmThere are multiple ways to do this (going from a wider gamut to smaller), one way is to simply clip colors which fall outside the target gamut. Another strategy is to roll off saturation as it approaches the outer limits of the color gamut, sort of like a soft clip / roll off for gamut.
This second method is a subjective rather than purely mathematical conversion.
Steve Shaw at lightspace will build LUTs one a one off basis, and could certainly provide you with a clipping LUT, and possibly one which rolls off gamut as well.

April 17, 2014 at 2:11 amIf you’re coming from XYZ that was created from a REC709 source, you can create a LUT that will work fairly easily yourself with a copy of Photoshop and a copy of Resolve…

April 17, 2014 at 3:01 amNat, worth noting the op was a asking for a LUT coming from XYZ, a simple OoG operation isn’t going to cut it. You need a proper color encoding conversion first.

April 17, 2014 at 3:02 amCurious how you would do such a thing, the currently available methods in photoshop would produce a mismatched white point.

April 17, 2014 at 3:20 amJuan your right, I was thinking it was encoded as DCI/P3 and targeting Rec709 in which case the gamut conversion would be P3>rec709 as well as changing the encoding XYZ>RGB.
Daniel, if your source was in fact rec709 and so its all in-gamut for rec709 perhaps all you need is conversion from XYZ to rec709 RGB. I believe Steve Shaw should be able to sell you with a LUT to do this.

April 17, 2014 at 8:46 pmJuan, it seems like you’re right. There is indeed seem to be a slight shift with Adobe’s XYZ profile.
Why the heck is this?
More oft than not color feels like the wild west…

It shouldn’t be a slight shift… it would be fairly significant one. Within reason of course.
