    Hi,

An updated version of the DaVinci Resolve for Mac Configuration Guide has been posted on our website. You can find the PDF on the DaVinci Support page.

This edition of the guide corresponds with the release of on the Resolve 7.1 for Mac. The December 2010 guide includes the following new information:

    • The use of a certified x16 PCI Express expansion chassis is now supported which provides more slots so you can install more PCI Express cards such as extra GPUs, RED Rockets and a HBA card to connect with your disk storage.
    • Multiple GPUs can be installed in a PCI Express expansion chassis to provide greater image processing performance. Please note it is best to use the same kind of GPUs in the chassis. If the GPUs are of different types, we expect the performance of the faster GPU to be limited to the same speed as the slower GPU in the same chassis.
    • Two RED Rocket cards can be used when working with r3d files in stereoscopic 3D.
    • Support for the JL Cooper Eclipse CX panel has been added and now appears in the DaVinci Resolve Preferences.
    • Apple ProRes read/write codec support is now installed by the DaVinci Resolve application itself. It is now optional as to whether you wish to install Final Cut Studio on the same Mac as Resolve when working with ProRes files.
    • “Choosing graphics cards for your Mac Pro” has been added to the guide to help determine which combinations of GPU and GUI cards can be used in a Mac Pro without adding a PCI Express expansion chassis.

We hope this guide proves useful and please let us know if there is anything you would like added or changed in the guide.

    Hello,

Last month I bought a 2×2.93 GHz 6-Core (Total 12core) Intel Xeon with 16Gb memory with ATI Radeon HD 5870 card… Please advice What GPU card should i install further to so can buy Resolve and use it on my new Mac Pro… If you think i need to have any other combination of GUi and GPU cards please advice… but I really don’t see anything written and talk about ATI Radeon HD 5870 with Resolve.

    Please help!

    Thanks

    Best regards

    Short answer, doesnt work.
You need at least one nVidia GPU powered card.
The cheapest and fastest internal solution today :
Go to eBay and buy a EVGA GTX 285 and a GT 120 from the Apple store.
Thats what i have and its running perfect.
    Pros : Price, reliability, noise
Cons : No warranty, very poor performance on the GT120 for everything else.
If money is not a problem, buy yourself the Quadro 4000 and keep the ATI for the UI and other apps.
Perfect solution : Buy an extendar, load it with Quadro 4800s and add a Quadro 4000 as your primary card.

Please refer to the excellent config guide : https://www.blackmagic-design.com/downloads/davinci/pdf/DaVinciResolveMacConfigGuide.pdf

it seems that Resolve needs “only one” Cuda enabled card.

So in theory… if i ran a ATI 5870 as my graphical interface and a GTX 285 as my “Cuda” card that would be faster (for other programs such as Apple Color) than GT120 and GTX 285 combo ….obviously this requires the Cubix PCI expansion solution.

Or does the Cubix require one of the power cables that the 5870 eats up?

If you are using this with an expansion chassis, this would be fine. You can put your GTX285 in the expansion. The PCI-expansion card does not require any cables.

    Hi there,

I have a similar configuration than yours and I wanna hear a little more about it.

Today Blackmagic Design updates Davinci resolve to 8. I read a press release, that the more Open CL cards would be supported in that release. I have a Raid Card in the Mac Pro and the Ati 5870.

So my question is: Did you succeed with your 5870 + an Nvidia Card to make Resolve work?
    What did you do exactly?

    Best regards
    Luc

    Luc,

I’m currently spec’ing out the system…haven’t committed the $$ to it yet, but i’m leaning toward:

    12 core 2.66
    Gt120 gui
    gtx285 gpu
•later adding cubix plus an additional gtx285 then changing the Gui to an ATI 5870.
