  • Data Storage Space min 400mbs? on DVD-r

i have just sucessfully BUILT+FORMATTED a 2 hour project using 4.1gb on a DVD-r..plays on my iMac and regular domestic DVD player no hassle.
I have just sucessfully BUILT + FORMATTED a 3 hour project using up 4.5gb on a DVD-r. WILL NOT play on my iMac but will play on domestic DVD player.
REENCODED ASSETS at a lower VBR setting for same project, BUILT + FORMATTED successfully using only 4.4gb of disc space, will not work on my iMac wil play on bog standard DVD player..

Do i have to reserve a minimum of 400mb, so that my ImacG5 (Intel core duo) can read the data storage on the DVD?
Does the same rule apply to PC users if they want to play my DVD-rs?
Is there any way of maxing out or increasing the potential for storage on DVD-r?
